Compressed Shaping: Concept and FPGA Demonstration

Probabilistic shaping (PS) has been widely studied and applied to optical fiber communications. The encoder of PS expends the number bit slots controls probability distribution channel input symbols. Not only studies focused on but also most works communications have assumed source uniformity (i.e. equal marks spaces) so far. On other hand, information is in general nonuniform, unless bit-scrambling or coding techniques balance performed. Interestingly, one can exploit nonuniformity reduce entropy symbols with encoder, which leads smaller required signal-to-noise ratio at a given logic rate. This benefit equivalent combination data compression PS, thus we call this technique compressed shaping. In work, explain its theoretical background detail, verify concept by both numerical simulation field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation such system. particular, find that power consumption forward error correction decoding up 90% nonuniform cases. additional hardware resources for are not significant compared coding, an insertion test successfully demonstrated FPGA.
